WAYS TO PREPARE FOR AN INTERVIEW

Nervous about that upcoming interview? Don't be! Follow these simple tips and you'll be prepared to show off your talents and expertise!

1. Research the position.

What knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) are required for success in this position? Do you have these KSAs? Think about your past experiences – including paid and volunteer work, full-time and temp work, internships, clubs, and associations. What evidence can you provide to show that you possess these KSAs?

2. Research the company.

What is the culture of this company? (Fun? Serious? Customer-driven?) Gather information from the company's annual report, their website, newspaper and magazine articles, etc. Would you fit into this culture? How could you demonstrate this?

3. Research the interviewer.

Know the proper spelling and pronunciation of the interviewer's name. Know the interviewer's position (manager, human resources specialist, etc.).

4. Research the interview location.

Know where the interview will take place and how to get there! Do a practice run if necessary. If the interview is out of town, confirm travel plans.

5. Set goals for the interview.

What do you want the interviewer to know about you? How will you work this into the conversation?

6. Review your resume.

What does the interviewer already know about you? What information needs to be clarified or explained in more detail? What do you want to highlight?

7. Practice answering interview questions.

Prepare an outline of your answers – but don't memorize them. Practice your responses out loud. Relate answers to information on your resume. Role play with a friend or coach.

8. Plan your outfit.

Dress professionally – even if the job is casual. Choose conservative styles and colors. Clothing doesn't have to be new – but should be clean, pressed, and mended if necessary.

9. Prepare an interview pack.

Plan to bring a portfolio or briefcase (NOT a backpack!). Include a notepad and pen, directions to the interview, extra copies of your resume, letters of recommendation, and supporting documents. Also pack an extra tie or extra pair of pantyhose.

10. Get a good night's sleep.

By this point, you are well prepared. Don't stay up late rehearsing questions and answers. Instead, get some sleep so you look fresh and alert.
